A Clinical Observation of Intestinal Obstruction


Abstract
This material in this report was based in 157 cases seen at the Chungnam University Hospital during the past 5 years from January 1970 to December 1974.
Among them, 125 cases were treated surgically and 32 cases were treated conservatively.
1) The frequent causes were postoperative adhesion (43.3%), intussusception (19. 1%), and stricture & intra-luminal obstruction (13.3%).
2) The most frequent age group was under the one-year (13.3%).
The sex distribution was 101 males (64.3%) and 56 females (35.7%) with ratio of 2: 1.
3) The location of intestinal obstruction` was 80.8% in small bowel and 19.2% in large bowel with ratio of 4.2: 1.
4) The cardinal symptoms and signs were abdominal pain (84.9%), vomiting (67.5%), abdo-minal distension (49. 0%).
5) Preoperative leukocytosis was noticed in 57.9% of cases.
6) As for the operative fashion: 86 cases (68.8%) were treated by operative release with operative decompression, 28 cases (23.2%) by primary intestinal resection.
7) The mortality was 7.0% (11 cases) in all 157 cases. The most frequent cause of death was septic shock.
